Solar energy projects attract growing investment interest

KATHMANDU: Interest in solar energy investment is on the rise as part of Nepal’s energy mix strategy. The trend comes as hydropower projects generate abundant electricity during the rainy season but produce less during the winter months, highlighting the need for alternative energy sources.

So far, 97 solar energy projects with a combined capacity of 2,104 megawatts have obtained survey permits from the Department of Power Development under the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation.

The government’s push for an energy mix and its policy to provide fair prices for electricity generated from solar energy have further encouraged investors. In the current fiscal year alone, six new solar projects have received survey permits.

Among notable projects, NRN Infrastructure and Development Limited, backed by investments from non-resident Nepalis, is set to construct the Rolpa Solar Power Project with a capacity of 100 MW. The company has also obtained survey permission for the Arghakhanchi Solar Power Project, which will have a capacity of 150 MW.

CG Energy Pvt. Ltd. has received survey permission for the 25 MW Palpa Dambak Solar Power Project. Additionally, the 10 MW Birat Barju Solar Power Project, Dangihat Solar Power Project, and Badganga Solar Power Project have also been granted survey permits. So far, 12 solar power projects with a total capacity of 84 MW have been granted electricity generation licenses.

Furthermore, five new projects with a total capacity of 10 MW have applied for survey permission, while three projects totaling 15 MW have applied for electricity generation permits, according to the department.

The growing interest in solar energy reflects the sector’s potential to supplement hydropower, ensure energy security during lean seasons, and promote sustainable development in Nepal.
