UML Secretary Yogesh Bhattarai welcomes returning leaders, stresses national and party victory

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML Secretary Yogesh Bhattarai has welcomed party leaders returning from other factions, stating that the focus should now be on the nation, the people, and the party’s victory, rather than individual leaders.

In a recent statement on Facebook, Bhattarai advised leaders returning to UML after splitting from the party that whether or not they accept the condition of helping specific leaders win is a matter of personal discretion. He stressed, however, that joining UML is about much more than individual conditions.

He wrote, “It’s up to you whether or not to accept the precondition of supporting certain leaders’ victory, but joining UML is a matter of higher importance. The focus should not be on which leader wins or loses, but on ensuring the victory of the nation, the Nepali people, and UML. For this, we are ready to lose a thousand times if necessary.”

Bhattarai’s comments came as several leaders, including Ramkumari Jhankri, from the Unified Socialist Party, are preparing to rejoin UML. In response, UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel had earlier stated publicly that those returning to the party must accept its policies and leadership without questioning them. Bhattarai’s statement is seen as a response to this call.

“Our principles and policies are our foundation,” Bhattarai continued. “Your collective efforts will help further refine and strengthen them. The leadership chosen through competition forms the basis of our unity.”

He also pointed out that the practice of discussing party policies and leadership before the 11th General Convention, which has already been scheduled, was established in UML’s Fifth General Convention. This reflects the ongoing practice of open debate within the party regarding leadership and direction.

As UML prepares for its 11th General Convention, Bhattarai highlighted that unity and shared vision are the party’s priorities, with the ultimate goal being the advancement of Nepal, the welfare of its people, and the continued growth of UML as a leading political force.
