Eight major rivers exceed danger levels; 12 above alert mark

KATHMANDU: Incessant rainfall has pushed eight major rivers across Nepal above the danger level, according to the latest update from the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology.

Flood monitoring stations show that water levels in the Bagmati, Sun Koshi, Arun, Tamor, Koshi, Budhikhola (Sunsari), and Biring Khola (Jhapa) rivers have exceeded critical thresholds.

Binod Parajuli, Chief of the Flood Forecasting Division, said that an additional 12 river stations have reported water levels above the alert mark. He noted that river levels are still rising in Koshi Province, while they are either stable or gradually decreasing in Bagmati and some parts of Madhesh Province.

The department also reported that most rivers and streams in Koshi, Madhesh, and Bagmati provinces are nearing alert levels. Rainfall in Bagmati and Madhesh provinces has started to ease, but moderate to heavy rainfall continues in several areas of Koshi Province.

In a bulletin issued this morning, the department warned that the current weather pattern is likely to persist for the next few hours. It has forecast a high flood risk in the affected rivers through this evening, with a moderate risk expected to continue until Monday morning.
