KAILALI: Indra Bahadur Singh Madai, along with his brothers Lok Bahadur Madai and Man Bahadur Madai of Malakheti Khamaura, Godavari Municipality-10, Kailali, has been running a mango business in partnership by leasing an orchard in Geta, Kailali.
Indra Bahadur has been leasing mango orchards for the past 11 years. Initially, he operated from an orchard on the premises of Ghanteshwor Temple in Khamaura.
However, after the orchard was damaged by a storm, he partnered with his brothers and shifted operations to a five-bigha mango orchard leased from a local resident in Geta, Godavari-5. The lease cost for one mango season is Rs 500,000.
The mango season is currently in full swing, with a variety of mangoes ripening in their orchard. “We haven’t used any pesticides or chemicals, so more customers are coming directly to the orchard to buy mangoes,” said Indra Bahadur. “There’s no need to take them to market—customers pick and buy them right from the trees.”
Man Bahadur Madai added that customers are coming from Dhangadhi, Attariya Caps Road, Lamki in Kailali, and from Gulariya, Mahendranagar, and Daiji in Kanchanpur.
So far this season, mangoes worth Rs 500,000 have been sold. “More than half of the mangoes are still on the trees. Some varieties ripen later, and we estimate sales worth another Rs 1 million,” he said.
According to Indra Bahadur, after deducting all expenses—including worker wages—annual savings can reach up to Rs 800,000. The orchard currently sees a daily turnover of Rs 35,000 to Rs 45,000. Retail prices are Rs 80 per kilogram, while wholesale buyers pay Rs 60.
