Budhanilkantha Municipality pushes to list Budhanilkantha Temple as UNESCO World Heritage Site



KATHMANDU: Budhanilkantha Municipality has intensified efforts to include the historic Budhanilkantha Temple, one of Kathmandu’s major religious and tourist landmarks, in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list.

Speaking at a program held to mark the 12th establishment day of the municipality, Mayor Mitharam Adhikari said that discussions have been held at various levels with relevant government bodies to move the proposal forward. He added that the municipality has also become proactive in reclaiming encroached public land in recent months.

Mayor Adhikari noted that education, health, infrastructure and sports have been kept at the center of the municipality’s development priorities. The education budget has been expanded to Rs 130 million, and free day meals have been introduced for students up to grade 10.

The municipality has also been providing incentives to encourage academic excellence, awarding Rs 500,000 to community schools achieving a 4 GPA and Rs 100,000 to individual students who secure the same score. According to the municipality, more than 300 patients are receiving services daily at the Municipal Hospital.

Addressing the event, Bagmati Province Minister for Labour, Employment and Transport, Jayram Thapa, praised the municipality’s work in development, good governance and service delivery.

Deputy Mayor Anita Lama said elected representatives and municipal staff have been working collectively to ensure that the services delivered to residents are effective and result-oriented.
