Former President Yadav to political parties: No time to think beyond elections now

KATHMANDU: Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal met with former President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav on Tuesday to discuss the upcoming elections and the country’s political stability.

Acting on the directive of Prime Minister Sushila Karki, Minister Aryal visited the former president’s residence in Bagdol, Lalitpur, as part of ongoing consultations to build a conducive environment for the elections.

During the meeting, Aryal briefed Dr. Yadav about the government’s preparations to ensure a fair, transparent, and secure election, in line with the public call for reform reflected through the recent Gen Z movement.

“The government is treating the election as its top priority and working to bring all sides together in this national mission,” Aryal said.

Former President Yadav commended the government’s preparations and expressed confidence in Prime Minister Karki’s leadership, saying, “A neutral government led by a former chief justice can indeed conduct fair elections.”

Recalling the elections held under former Chief Justice Khil Raj Regmi’s leadership, Yadav said, “The situation was unfavorable back then too, but we succeeded. This time, if all sides cooperate and trust the process, elections can be held smoothly.”

Yadav emphasized that only elections could resolve the ongoing political uncertainty. “The only way to safeguard the constitution and democracy is through elections,” he said.

Urging political parties to act responsibly, he added, “Political parties are the custodians of elections. This is not the time to think beyond them. If this process derails, the country could face a serious crisis. The Pandora’s box must not be opened—every side must fulfill its responsibility on time.”
