Two separate proposals for Nepali Congress general convention; Mahendra Yadav challenges Gagan Thapa
Two separate proposals have been presented for the upcoming 15th General Convention of the Nepali Congress. General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa proposed holding the convention from December 31, 2025 to January 3, 2026, while Joint General Secretary Mahendra Yadav suggested May 10 to 12, 2026 as the dates. Both submitted their detailed schedules during the Central Working Committee meeting held in Sanepa on Tuesday. Thapa said although the convention should ideally be held in November-December, he proposed the December-January timeline as a “middle path” to achieve consensus. He also insisted that the general convention be completed before the March 5 elections.
CPN (Maoist Centre) and allies merge to form Nepali Communist Party
The new party formed through the merger of nine parties, including the CPN (Maoist Centre), has been named ‘Nepali Communist Party’, party spokesperson Agni Prasad Sapkota announced Tuesday. The announcement came after the final meeting of the CPN (Maoist Centre) General Convention Organizing Committee. While the election symbol, a pentagon star, was confirmed in last Friday’s agreement among eight parties, the party name had not been finalized until now. “The national convention for the new party’s unity will be held on November 5, where representatives participating in the general convention will be confirmed through mutual consensus among all parties,” Sapkota said.
Industrialists agree to pay one installment of disputed 28-part premium fee to restore power lines
Industrialists have agreed to deposit one part of the disputed premium fee, divided into 28 installments, to have their disconnected power lines reconnected and to initiate a review process. Speaking at a press conference held at the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) on Tuesday, FNCCI President Chandra Prasad Dhakal said the industrialists have agreed to the proposal finalized on Monday in the presence of the Prime Minister and government officials.
General Secretary Gagan Thapa warns: Congress will be confined to history if reforms are not made
Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa has warned that the party risks being confined to history if it fails to undertake timely reforms. He cautioned that unless the party engages in serious self-assessment and internal reform, the people will eventually forget the Congress. Presenting a detailed proposal at the ongoing Central Working Committee meeting in Sanepa on Tuesday, Thapa stated, “We are facing a crisis of both trust and relevance. Our name and history may be grand, but only slogans cannot rebuild public confidence.”
Former President Bhandari obtains replacement copy of citizenship certificate
Former President Bidya Devi Bhandari on Tuesday visited the District Administration Office, Kathmandu, to obtain a replacement copy of her citizenship certificate. Her original citizenship document was destroyed when protesters vandalized and set fire to her residence in Bhainsepati on the second day of the Gen-Z movement on September 9. According to the administration office, Bhandari personally appeared at the office to complete the process and receive the replacement copy.
Prachanda says broad left unity paving way for socialist revolution
Nepal Communist Party (Maoist Centre) Co-ordinator Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has said that the unification among leftist forces has created a favorable environment to move toward a socialist revolution. Addressing the meeting of the Maoist Centre’s National Convention Organizing Committee at Pragya Bhawan in Kamaladi on Tuesday, Prachanda remarked that the recent Gen Z movement should be interpreted as a call for socialist transformation.
Five rescued, seven still missing after avalanche in Rolwaling Valley
Five people, two foreigners and three Nepalis, injured in an avalanche in the Rolwaling Valley have been rescued by helicopter on Tuesday, while seven others remain missing. Chief District Officer Narayan Prasad Risal said the rescued climbers were airlifted from the base camp of Yalung Ri Himal. Three other Nepali guides who managed to escape the avalanche have taken shelter in Na village and are awaiting evacuation.
SC declines interim order on former NEA chief Shakya’s reinstatement plea
The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to issue an interim order on a writ petition filed by former Managing Director of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), Hitendra Dev Shakya, seeking his reinstatement. A single bench of Justice Nripadhwaj Niraula, hearing the petition filed on Monday, issued a show-cause order to the government instead.
Dissident Maoist leader Janardan Sharma launches youth-led political campaign
Former deputy general secretary of the CPN (Maoist Centre), Janardan Sharma, officially launched a new political campaign on Tuesday, announcing his departure from decades-long allegiance with party chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal. Speaking at a press conference in Lalitpur, Sharma expressed his dissent against the recently brokered unification agreement involving the Maoist Centre and eight other parties.
RPP Nepal initiates merger talks with Rastriya Prajatantra Party
The Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) Nepal has initiated steps toward collaboration and potential unification with like-minded political forces. On Tuesday, a dialogue committee formed under the leadership of RPP Nepal Senior Vice-Chair Rajiv Parajuli formally presented a unification proposal to RPP Chair Rajendra Lingden. The meeting took place at Lingden’s residence in Lamatar, Lalitpur. Committee member and RPP Nepal General Secretary Rajaram Bartoula described the discussions as positive, stating the talks focused on recent political developments in the country, rising polarization, and the importance of cooperation and unity among ideologically aligned parties.
NEPSE drops 27.64 points as all sectoral sub-indices turn red
The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) index fell by 27.64 points on Tuesday, closing at 2,595.24 points. The total turnover during the session reached Rs 5.15 billion. Among the companies traded, 213 saw their share prices decline, 33 witnessed gains, and three remained unchanged. Mabilung Energy Limited recorded the highest gains for sellers, while Muktinath Agriculture Company shares incurred the largest losses. The fall in the NEPSE index impacted all sectoral sub-indices, which closed in the red.
Govt committed to electrifying transport and cooking, says Energy Minister Ghising
Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Kulman Ghising has reiterated the government’s commitment to transitioning transportation and cooking systems to electricity and alternative energy. Speaking at the 29th anniversary of the Alternative Energy Promotion Centre (AEPC) on Tuesday, Minister Ghising said progress has been made, but significant work remains. He highlighted the increasing use of electric vehicles and the need to replace gas-based cooking with induction or other alternative energy technologies. Ghising said the government is revising policies to facilitate the expansion of charging stations and is preparing a roadmap for effective solar energy deployment in irrigation systems.
Youth arrested for involvement in arson at Singha Durbar and Parliament building
Police have arrested a youth accused of involvement in vandalism, arson, and looting around the Singha Durbar area during the Gen Z movement protests on September 9. According to Kathmandu District Police, 18-year-old Shivam Chaudhary Yadav, a resident of Bateshwar Rural Municipality-5 in Dhanusha and currently living in Mahalaxmi Municipality-3, Lalitpur, was taken into custody. Police said Yadav was involved in the vandalism and arson targeting the Singha Durbar and Parliament buildings, as well as the Baneshwor Police Circle premises and vehicles during the protest.
Rs 6.24 million collected in reconstruction fund for Gen-Z protest damages
The government’s Physical Infrastructure Reconstruction Fund, set up to repair structures damaged during the Gen-Z protests of September 8 and 9, has collected Rs 62.4 million so far, according to the Ministry of Finance. Finance Ministry Spokesperson Tank Prasad Pandey said the amount was deposited into the fund’s account as of Monday evening. The fund aims to rebuild public properties, government offices, and local infrastructure that were damaged by arson, vandalism, and encroachment during the demonstrations.
Gold price drops by Rs 1,400 per tola, silver down by Rs 45
The price of gold fell by Rs 1,400 per tola on Tuesday, according to the Federation of Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers’ Associations. The Federation set the price of fine gold at Rs 238,300 per tola today, down from Rs 239,700 on Monday. Gold prices have been gradually declining.
Former NEA MD Hitendra Dev Shakya files petition in Supreme Court against transfer
Former Managing Director of Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) Hitendra Dev Shakya has filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court challenging the government’s decision to transfer him. Shakya has sought reinstatement to his position as the Managing Director of NEA through the petition. His case has been scheduled for a hearing on Tuesday before Justice Nripdhwaj Niraula’s bench.
Bodies of two missing Italian climbers recovered from Pangbari Himal
The bodies of two Italian climbers, missing for the past five days in the Pangbari Himal, have been recovered. The climbers, 67-year-old Farronato Stefano and 37-year-old Caputo Alessandro, were found buried under snow at Camp 1 of Pangbari Himal, according to Rajkumar Shrestha, spokesperson and Deputy Superintendent of Police at Gorkha District Police Office. The bodies were airlifted to Samagaun by helicopter. The climbers had been stranded along with three other Italian citizens and one Nepali guide since last Wednesday while returning from the mountain due to heavy snowfall. Farinato and Gaputo were unable to complete their ascent and were trapped during their descent.
Nepal, China discuss strengthening bilateral health cooperation
Health and Population Minister Dr. Sudha Sharma held a courtesy meeting with Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Chen Song on Tuesday to discuss ways to enhance bilateral cooperation in the health sector, the Ministry of Health and Population said. During the meeting at the ministry, officials held detailed discussions on improving and expanding services at BP Koirala Cancer Hospital, Bharatpur, and Civil Hospital.
Nicholas Bhusal arrested for inciting violence on social media
Police arrested self-proclaimed activist Nicholas Bhusal on Tuesday. A team from the Valley Crime Investigation Office detained Bhusal from Saraswati Ashram in Gorkha Municipality–8, police confirmed. Authorities said he had been under surveillance for allegedly attempting to incite violence through social media posts. Bhusal had recently drawn controversy after threatening to burn down the houses of former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, calling them “killers” during a press conference held at Samvad Dabali last Saturday. He warned that his group would “take matters into their own hands” if the government failed to take action against them over the Gen-Z protest crackdown of September 8–9.
Bhattarai proposes making 16 the age for both citizenship and voting rights
Former Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai has called on Gen-Z and other young citizens to take charge of the country’s leadership through elections rather than street movements. In a Facebook post on Monday, Dr. Bhattarai said that the recent transformative and sacrificial movements have made it clear that the country is searching for young leadership. He urged youths to register their names on the voters’ list as the first step toward political participation.
