PM Oli and Prachanda meet to break deadlock on TJ appointments

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Maoist Centre Chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ met on Sunday at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers in Singha Durbar to discuss key issues related to Nepal’s transitional justice process.

The meeting focused on resolving disagreements over appointments to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Commission of Investigation on Enforced Disappeared Persons—two bodies central to the post-conflict peace process.

Despite the formation of a recommendation committee led by former Chief Justice Om Prakash Mishra, the major political parties have yet to reach a consensus on nominees for these commissions.

Prachanda was joined by his party’s Deputy General Secretary Barshaman Pun in the talks with PM Oli, following previous tensions that had stalled dialogue. CPN-UML leader Agni Kharel also participated in the meeting.

The discussions followed a failed tripartite meeting scheduled for Baisakh 18, where Prachanda declined to attend. Only Prime Minister Oli and Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba were present at that session.

Prachanda had openly criticized the process, accusing the government of sidelining him and attempting to finalize decisions without proper consultation, effectively reducing him to a bystander.
