KATHMANDU: The Nepal Insurance Authority has reported that insurance claims amounting to Rs 12,866,688,331 have been filed following the extensive damage caused by floods and landslides due to persistent rainfall on September 26.
A total of 3,686 claims have been submitted, and Rs 1,788,138,154 has already been disbursed in the form of payouts for 1,809 claims.
Of the total claims, property insurance accounted for the largest portion, with Rs 9,222,256,228 being claimed under 1,774 property insurance policies. Engineering and contractor risks led to claims worth Rs 2,841,265,592 across 324 cases.
Claims related to private vehicle insurance amounted to Rs 415,344,000 for 954 applications, while public vehicle insurance claims totaled Rs 289,916,000 for 393 applications.
Water insurance claims saw a total of Rs 44.97 crore for 23 cases, and livestock insurance claims reached Rs 38.255 crore for 60 applications.
Additionally, Rs 15.91 crore was demanded through 137 agricultural crop insurance claims, while miscellaneous insurance claims amounted to Rs 7.599 crore.
The breakdown of claims across provinces reveals varying levels of settlement. In Koshi Province, 267 claims were filed, with 158 of them being paid.
In Madhesh Province, 108 claims were submitted, with only 37 being resolved. Bagmati Province, which was significantly impacted by the floods and landslides, saw 3,213 claims, of which 1,585 were settled.
Gandaki Province filed 47 claims, with 15 being paid, while Karnali Province had eight claims, with four paid. Sudurpaschim Province, with just six claims, saw three settlements.
These figures highlight the financial impact of the floods and landslides on both the affected communities and the insurance sector.
While a substantial number of claims have been resolved, many remain pending, indicating the ongoing challenges faced in compensating the affected individuals and restoring economic stability.
