Mechi Customs Office: Exports decline as imports rise



BHADRAPUR: Imports through the Kakarbhitta checkpoint in Nepal’s eastern Jhapa district have increased in the first quarter of the fiscal year 2025/26, while exports have declined. Goods worth Rs 16.25 billion were imported during this period.

According to Ishwor Kumar Humagain, Information Officer at Mechi Customs Office, imports in the same period of the previous fiscal year totaled Rs 14.28 billion, indicating a significant rise this year.

Conversely, exports from the checkpoint have decreased. Goods worth Rs 7.96 billion were exported in the first quarter of the current fiscal year, compared to Rs 8.30 billion in the same period last year. Key exports from Kankarbhitta include cardamom, tea, plywood, veneer sheets, chhurpi, amriso, ginger, dried beans, musuro, and iron sheets.

The office has collected Rs 5.46 billion in revenue from imports and exports during the first four months of the fiscal year 2025/26.
