PM Karki vows to advance disability-inclusive development

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister (PM) Sushila Karki has expressed her commitment to promoting disability-inclusive development and transforming governance by prioritizing the ownership, solidarity, and leadership of persons with disabilities in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

She conveyed this commitment in a message of best wishes issued today on the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

In her message, the Prime Minister stated that the government is actively working to ensure easy access to education, health, employment, participation, social security, and rehabilitation services for persons with disabilities.

She clarified that the state’s policy is to create a dignified and equitable living environment for all persons with disabilities by prioritizing services and facilities based on their socio-economic status and the severity of their disabilities.

The message also highlights the need to create an accessible, barrier-free, and respectful environment for all persons with disabilities by removing physical, visual, communication, and legal obstacles.

The Prime Minister expressed confidence that meaningful achievements can be made through the joint efforts of all three tiers of government in the fields of disability prevention, rehabilitation, and programs supporting employment and self-employment, ensuring independent and self-reliant lives for persons with disabilities.

She noted that the Constitution of Nepal, along with international treaties and conventions to which Nepal is a party, and existing national laws, have comprehensively addressed the economic, social, cultural, and political rights of persons with disabilities.

Extending her best wishes, the Prime Minister expressed hope that today’s observance would inspire and encourage government and non-government organizations, as well as all stakeholders, to strengthen their work for the rights, interests, protection, and welfare of persons with disabilities and their families.
