Department of Passports to issue 1,000 passports daily

KATHMANDU: The Department of Passports has announced that it will distribute 1,000 passports each day, excluding public holidays, starting this evening.

According to a statement issued by the Department, a new procurement agreement for the supply of electronic passports was signed with a new supplier in August. Under this agreement, new infrastructure and systems are being developed to begin the upgraded passport service from February 23, 2026.

The Department acknowledged facing temporary challenges in passport distribution due to the transition between the outgoing and incoming suppliers, a limited stock of passport booklets, and high demand from applicants.

It assured that efforts are underway to prevent any shortage of passports during this transitional period and urged citizens to apply only for essential travel purposes until further notice.

The Department also cautioned the public not to rely on unauthorized intermediaries for passport-related services and to stay alert against potential fraud.
