Home Minister directs fresh CIB probe into Nirmala Pant case

KATHMANDU: Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak has directed the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police to initiate a renewed and in-depth investigation into the rape and murder of Nirmala Pant in Bhimdatta Municipality, Kanchanpur.

During an inspection visit to the CIB office on Sunday, Minister Lekhak instructed officers to leave no stone unturned in pursuing justice in the Pant case and to intensify investigations into all complex cases currently under the bureau’s jurisdiction.

“I urge you to expedite investigations into the Nirmala Pant case and other complicated matters CIB is handling,” Lekhak said. “Public trust in CIB is growing within the police force, this confidence must be upheld through diligent work.”

The minister also acknowledged the bureau’s performance despite limited resources and emphasized the government’s commitment to equipping CIB with better tools and support.

Lekhak informed the team that a new Financial Crime Investigation Division has been established to address the growing number of financial crimes across the country.

“As trust in the police increases, we’re seeing a rise in demands for more police posts nationwide,” he said. “This fiscal year, the government has allocated more resources to improve police services.”

He highlighted CIB’s critical role within Nepal Police and stressed the need to enhance its capacity in terms of technology and human resources.

Senior Superintendent of Police Hobindra Bogati delivered a presentation outlining the bureau’s operations, recent actions, successes, and ongoing challenges. He confirmed that investigations into the Nirmala Pant case and other incidents are actively underway.
