Newar culture passed down to new generation

TANAHU: In a bid to preserve and promote Newar heritage, the Newa: Tazilji Puch Byas Nagar Committee has launched an initiative to pass traditional Newar culture to the younger generation.

As part of the effort, the committee organized a three-month training program focused on traditional Newar music and dance, including the Dhime Baja, a prominent instrument in Newar cultural celebrations.

According to committee chair Sandesh Narayan Shrestha, the training was aimed at reviving interest among the youth, as traditional practices are increasingly being forgotten.

“We are committed to preserving Newar culture,” said Shrestha. “Over the past three months, we trained 40 young participants from Byas Municipality in various cultural forms.”

The training included instruction in several traditional performances such as the Tazilji dance, Dhime Baja, Lakhe dance, Takatuke dance, and Kumari dance.

“Our elders have long preserved these traditions. Now, it is our turn to carry them forward,” Shrestha added. “We must not forget our language and cultural roots. This training was an effort to bridge the generational gap.”

Sudip Shrestha led the training sessions. On the final day, participants showcased their newly learned skills in a public performance, highlighting the richness of Newar cultural heritage.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, Byas Municipality Mayor Baikuntha Neupane remarked that the traditions of the Newar community play a vital role in preserving Hinduism. He emphasized the municipality’s continued support for safeguarding the community’s original cultural practices.
