Karnali produces 258,000 metric tonnes of maize



SURKHET: Maize remains the most widely produced food grain in Karnali Province, surpassing all other crops in terms of yield.

According to the Ministry of Land Management, Agriculture, and Cooperatives, Karnali recorded a maize production of 258,876 metric tonnes this year. The Directorate of Agriculture under the Ministry reported that maize is cultivated across 82,808 hectares of land in the province.

Wheat ranks second in terms of production volume, with 71,769 hectares of land under cultivation across the province’s 10 districts. Last year alone, Karnali produced 151,990 metric tonnes of wheat.

Paddy is the third most produced crop in the region. Director of the Directorate, Tilak Pandey, stated that 146,679 metric tonnes of paddy were harvested last year from 41,304 hectares of farmland.

Additionally, Karnali has produced 18,826 metric tonnes of millet, 9,709 metric tonnes of barley, and 2,633 metric tonnes of buckwheat. Millet and buckwheat, primarily cultivated in the mountainous areas, are grown on 13,704 hectares and 2,377 hectares of land, respectively.
