MCC Board approves additional funding for Nepal Compact

The Board of Directors of the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) has sanctioned an additional $50 million for the Nepal Compact.

This Board action underscores the shared commitment between MCC and the Government of Nepal to advancing Nepal’s development priorities through transformative, high-quality infrastructure projects.

“The additional funding reaffirms our mutual dedication to ensuring the compact’s success in strengthening Nepal’s electricity grid and supporting long-term economic growth,” said MCC Vice President of Compact Operations Cameron Alford.

Prachanda emphasizes clear intent for good governance

Maoist Center Chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has stressed the importance of clear intentions and loyalty from political leadership to establish good governance in Nepal.

Speaking at the handover program of the Kathmandu branch of the Federation of Nepali Journalists, he highlighted that discussing ideals is not enough; the key is to put those ideals into practice with integrity.

“Many of us talk about ideals, but what matters is how we act in practice. Intention and loyalty are what really count,” said Dahal. “Are we truly fighting corruption and advocating for good governance with sincerity? Has Nepali society seen this from political parties and the government? These are serious questions that need answers.”

Gold prices rise by Rs 2,000

Gold prices have surged in the Nepali market on Friday.

As reported by the Federation of Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers Association, the price of gold increased by Rs 2,000 per tola, standing at Rs 153,500 per tola, compared to Thursdya’s rate of Rs 151,500 per tola.

Silver prices have also climbed, with today’s rate at Rs 1,810 per tola, up from Rs 1,790 per tola the previous day.

Crisis deepens for UML’s Rishikesh Pokharel as personal secretary accused of fraud after wife

The crisis surrounding CPN-UML MP and Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, Rishikesh Pokharel, continues to escalate as fresh fraud allegations emerge involving his personal secretary.

Pokharel’s wife, Anjala Koirala, remains absconding after being implicated in a cooperative fraud case. She is accused of defrauding the Umagauri Agricultural Cooperative Society in Morang, a cooperative that was reportedly initiated by Pokharel himself.

The Morang Public Prosecutor’s Office has filed charges against 26 individuals, including Koirala, with the Morang District Court. However, Koirala has not appeared in court, and a 35-day deadline for her to do so has already passed.

Frequent earthquakes continue to shake western Nepal

A 4.4-magnitude earthquake struck near Luma in Mugu on Friday morning at 8:03 am, according to the National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Center.

This tremor adds to a series of small earthquakes that have been continuously affecting western Nepal.

The Sudurpaschim and Karnali provinces, in particular, have experienced frequent seismic activity.

Health insurance reform committee submits report to Health Minister

A nine-member committee tasked with reforming Nepal’s health insurance sector has submitted its comprehensive report to Health and Population Minister Pradeep Paudel.

During the handover ceremony held at the Ministry of Health and Population, Paudel highlighted the urgency of health insurance reform, committing to implement the recommendations outlined in the report.

“The current program has not been well-managed, and the target groups are not fully benefiting. This report provides a roadmap for addressing these challenges,” he said.

Minister Lekhak instructs result-oriented activities

Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak has instructed Chief District Officers and Security Chiefs from across the country to focus on result-oriented activities despite limited resources.

During a virtual meeting with District Security Committees organized by the Home Ministry today, Minister Lekhak emphasized the importance of addressing challenges such as drug abuse, rising suicide rates, and road accidents.

He urged officials to carry out these tasks diligently, given the constraints.
