Tanahun’s ‘Chhabdibarahi’ emerging as a religious tourist destination

DAMAULI: The renowned Chhabdibarahi temple in Byas Municipality-14 in Tanahun is increasingly attracting devotees and tourists, establishing itself as a key religious tourism site.

Devotees from across districts visit the temple, believing their wishes will be fulfilled. Prem Bahadur Thapa, Chairman of the Chhabdibarahi Development Trust, stated that around six to seven lakh devotees visit annually.

The temple is accessible via a seven-kilometer paved road from the district headquarters in Damauli. The temple was reconstructed and beautified last year.

The reconstruction cost Rs. 7 million, including Rs. 2.4 million from the Gandaki Province government and Rs. 4.6 million from the Trust’s internal funds. On Saturday alone, about 5,000 devotees visited.

During the month of August, worship is paused on Aunsi and Ekadashi, explained Thapa. “It is believed that the water goddess resides in Chhabdibarahi as a fish with a golden tika. Thousands of fish swim in the river outside the temple. Devotees believe that bathing in the Chhabdi Kunda and worshiping with fasting can absolve unintentional sins and fulfill wishes,” he said.

The temple has three Magar priests, and sacrifices—including ducks, pigeons, goats, and cows—are offered on days other than Shrawan, Ekadashi, and Aunsi. Key attractions include the old temple structure, a fish-mouth fountain, fish in the pond, and a Matsyagandha statue at the center of the pond.

Chairman Thapa added that a master plan has been prepared to protect the temple, promote eco-friendly infrastructure, and boost religious and rural agricultural tourism.

The plan includes programs to raise awareness on preserving cultural and religious heritage, improving temple premises, and managing waste efficiently.
