Vehicular movement restricted at night along BP Highway

KAVREPALANCHOK: Authorities have imposed a ban on vehicular movement along the BP Highway during nighttime hours starting today. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority issued the restriction citing the likelihood of heavy rainfall and high risk of floods and landslides.

A meeting of the Kavrepalanchok District Disaster Management Committee decided to restrict all non-essential traffic on the highway until October 7. The restriction applies from 5 p.m. to 5 a.m. daily, according to Committee Coordinator and Chief District Officer Umesh Dhakal.

The ban covers the road section from Kavrebhanjyang in Dhulikhel to Nepal Thok on the Sindhuli border. Vehicles traveling from Kathmandu will be stopped at Kavrebhanjyang, while those coming from Sindhuli will be halted at Nepal Thok.

Authorities said the measure was taken to minimize disaster risks during the active monsoon, recalling that similar restrictions were imposed earlier this season as well as in previous years when floods and landslides severely damaged several stretches of the 160-kilometer highway.
