Lekh Jung Thapa publishes divorce paper to counter polygamy claims

KATHMAMDU: Dr. Lekh Jung Thapa, the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) candidate for Rupandehi-3 by-election, has released a court document confirming his divorce from his first wife, responding to allegations of polygamy.

The document from Rupandehi District Court shows that Thapa legally separated from Sulochana Ghimire on January 29, 2023. After being nominated, questions arose about him having two wives. Posting on Facebook, Thapa admitted marrying twice but clarified: “It is equally true that I divorced one of my wives. I also remain a father to my child from that marriage.”

RSP General Secretary Kabindra Burlakoti said the party verified the matter during its internal screening. “We found that he had legally divorced two years ago, and we were satisfied with his explanation,” he noted.

Burlakoti dismissed the issue as exaggerated, adding that cordial ties with his former wife are natural given their shared child.
