Nepali Congress denounces unconstitutional attempts to undermine constitution

KATHMANDU: The ruling coalition partner Nepali Congress has concluded that any attempt to breach the constitutional framework through unconstitutional means is unacceptable.

The statement follows a meeting of the party’s office bearers and former office bearers held at party president Sher Bahadur Deuba’s residence in Budhanilkantha on Monday.

Speaking after the meeting, Nepali Congress spokesperson Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat said, “Breaking the constitutional boundary through unconstitutional methods is inappropriate. The concerned parties must take this issue seriously.”

The Congress statement comes in response to increasing street protests led by groups such as the Rastriya Prajatantra Party, Rastriya Prajatantra Party Nepal, and other royalist and pro-Hindu state factions, who have been demanding the reinstatement of monarchy and declaration of Nepal as a Hindu state.

The Nepali Congress asserted that any actions taken beyond the constitutional framework are both inappropriate and unconstitutional. “This is not a constitution handed down by anyone; it is a constitution created by the people of Nepal themselves, through their elected representatives,” Mahat said. “Therefore, it is our responsibility to protect this constitution.”

He further stated that any necessary improvements to the constitution should be based on practical experiences and must be carried out through parliamentary processes. “Any issue that needs reform should be addressed through parliament, which represents the people. That is why the government has proposed moving forward with constitutional amendments.”

The meeting also discussed completing the party’s active membership renewal process by the end of the upcoming month of Asar (mid-July), according to spokesperson Mahat. He also informed that a meeting of the party’s Central Working Committee will be convened soon.

The upcoming central committee meeting will deliberate on safeguarding the constitutional achievements of republicanism and inclusion, activating the party base, and addressing future challenges related to economic transformation, the party said.
