Former President Bhandari returns from China, terms visit ‘productive’

KATHMANDU: Former President Bidya Devi Bhandari returned to Nepal on Monday morning after completing a week-long visit to China, leading a 15-member delegation that included CPN-UML Deputy General Secretary Raghubir Mahaseth, leader Karna Bahadur Thapa, and Minister for Industry, Commerce, and Supplies Damodar Bhandari.

Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, the former president briefly described her visit as “successful and productive” but refrained from elaborating on the nature of high-level meetings held during her stay.

She also did not comment on growing speculation about a potential push for communist unity or her possible return to active politics under the CPN-UML’s leadership.

Bhandari directed further queries to Industry Minister Damodar Bhandari, who provided a detailed account of the visit. Speaking to the media, Minister Bhandari highlighted the diplomatic and cultural significance of the trip, highlighting the recognition and goodwill shown by the Chinese side.

“Our delegation was warmly received and given high-level respect in Chinese forums,” he said. “This visit has importance in terms of enhancing economic diplomacy and cultural ties. China expressed strong goodwill toward Nepal.”

Addressing political interpretations surrounding the visit, Minister Bhandari dismissed speculation that the trip was connected to a renewed push for leftist unity or a political comeback for the former president.

“This was a goodwill visit with both governmental and party representation,” he said. “It should not be linked to internal party leadership matters or potential communist unification.”

He also noted that the Nepali delegation participated in a multilateral forum attended by representatives from 60 countries. Discussions during the visit reportedly focused on strengthening Nepal–China relations and fostering stability in Nepali politics.

“China appreciated the efforts of Nepali parties—especially the cooperation between Nepali Congress and CPN-UML—to ensure political stability,” Minister Bhandari sad. “The message from our northern neighbor was clear: the current coalition is seen as a positive force for Nepal’s stability.”

The visit comes at a time of increased political maneuvering within Nepal, but for now, both the former president and party officials are presenting it strictly as a diplomatic and cultural engagement.
