KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress Vice President Purna Bahadur Khadka has hinted at contesting for the party presidency in the upcoming 15th General Convention.

Speaking at a press conference on Sunday ahead of a training and orientation program in Rupandehi, Khadka indicated his possible candidacy, stating that his political journey mirrors that of current party president Sher Bahadur Deuba.

“I started as an ordinary member of the Nepal Student Union (NSU), moving up as a unit member, president, central member, district vice president, and district president, and now I am the party’s vice president,” Khadka said. “Congress is a party of fair competition and endless possibilities.”

Though the convention date is yet to be finalized, party leaders have already started lobbying for leadership positions. Khadka, a prominent figure within the establishment faction, suggested that he is ready to take on the role of party president.

“The current president (Deuba) also climbed through similar ranks before leading the party,” he said. “Congress has always nurtured leadership by respecting internal grievances and party discipline.”

On a different note, Khadka also spoke about the Social Media Bill, which is currently under parliamentary discussion. He assured that the Congress party will amend it to protect constitutional rights while preventing misuse.

“The bill won’t be passed in its current form,” he clarified. “Our priority is to ensure responsible social media use while upholding fundamental rights.”
