KATHMANDU: As discussions of alternative leadership within the CPN-UML gain momentum, Prime Minister and party chairperson KP Sharma Oli visited former President Bidya Devi Bhandari in Budhanilkantha on Thursday.

Oli, after securing approval for his political report in the party’s secretariat meeting earlier in the day, spent two hours in discussion with Bhandari at her residence.

According to Oli’s secretariat, the meeting focused on recent political developments and the party’s internal dynamics.

Bhandari’s potential return to UML politics

Bhandari, who served two terms as Nepal’s president and was previously a UML vice-chairperson, has reportedly expressed interest in re-entering active politics. Party insiders indicate efforts are underway to facilitate her return.

Her return, however, would require significant adjustments within the UML leadership. Some leaders are advocating for a party convention ahead of the 2084 elections to position Bhandari for a prominent leadership role, potentially replacing Oli.

Growing pressures within the UML

Oli is under increasing scrutiny following recent disciplinary actions against senior leaders, including the expulsion of former vice-chair Dr. Bhim Rawal and the suspension of standing committee member  Dr. Binda Pandey and central committee member Ushakiran Timalsina.

Critics argue these measures were excessive and poorly timed, exacerbating tensions within the party.

Bhandari is said to have criticized these actions in private conversations with close associates, expressing a desire to mediate and support unity within the UML.

Oli’s earlier stance

In a recent workshop, Oli publicly stated that discussions regarding Bhandari’s return had not yet occurred. However, he acknowledged that any such move would be managed respectfully by the party.

Thursday’s meeting marks a notable shift, indicating potential negotiations over Bhandari’s re-entry into UML politics.

This development adds a new dimension to the party’s internal debates as it prepares for upcoming elections.
