Prithvi Subba Gurung declares KP Sharma Oli irreplaceable in UML

KATHMANDU: UML leader Prithvi Subba Gurung has asserted that CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli has no alternative in the party. Gurung made the remarks during an interaction organized by Press Chautari Nepal in Kathmandu on Monday.

Gurung, who has previously served as Minister for Communication and Information Technology, claimed that both domestic and foreign actors conspired against Oli due to his strong political influence.

“KP Sharma Oli became the target of conspiracies because of his strength. The attacks on him were part of a long-planned strategy, which even incited the sentiments of the Gen-Z generation to create chaos in the country. Oli is the guardian of the nation’s sovereignty. The attacks on him are attacks on the country itself,” he said.

Despite differences on several issues, Gurung said Oli remains necessary for the country, the party, and the preservation of the communist movement.

“My support is with Oli. There will come a day when the entire nation will echo ‘Oli-Oli’. While some immediate propaganda has tarnished his image, labeling him as ‘corrupt,’ history will remember him,” Gurung said.

He further stated that Oli is essential for the defense of Nepal’s democratic movement and the country. “The 11th General Convention must reaffirm him as chairman. I am personally committed to ensuring this. Oli is the brand of UML,” Gurung added.

Targeting former President Bidya Devi Bhandari, Gurung also remarked that no member of her family can be the successor to the multiparty democracy and people’s ideology propagated by Madan Bhandari.

Once considered close to Bhandari, Gurung has emerged as a staunch Oli supporter after serving as Minister for Communication and Information Technology. While he had power struggles with Oli during his tenure as Gandaki Province Chief Minister, Gurung has now pledged his support for Oli in the upcoming 11th General Convention.
