31 sluices of Koshi Barrage opened amid rising water levels

SUNSARI: The water level in the Saptakoshi River has surged due to continuous rainfall in the hilly regions. According to Yograj Khatiwada, spokesperson for the District Police Office, Sunsari, the water flow at the Koshi Barrage reached 226,560 cusecs per second as measured last night.

Earlier at 2 PM on Sunday, the flow was recorded at 174,375 cusecs, prompting the opening of 23 gates. As of the latest update, 31 of the 56 gates of the barrage have now been opened.

Spokesperson Khatiwada noted that a red light signal is activated when the flow exceeds 150,000 cusecs, indicating a danger level. The control room has confirmed that the red warning light has been switched on accordingly.

Authorities are monitoring the situation closely as rainfall continues to raise the river’s level.
