Nepal-China diplomatic relations enter 70th year

KATHMANDU: Today marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Nepal and China. To commemorate this milestone, various events are being organized both here in Kathmandu and in Beijing on Friday.

The historic ties between the two countries date back informally to the marriage of Nepalese Princess Bhrikuti with Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo, a relationship that has strengthened further in the modern era. Official diplomatic relations were established on August 1, 1955, with China.

Former Nepali ambassador to China, Rajeshwar Acharya, highlighted that the relationship between Nepal and China is grounded in the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, peaceful coexistence, mutual cooperation, respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty, and non-interference.

Both countries have prioritized this partnership, and the top leadership of Nepal and China remain actively engaged in strengthening these ties.

Acharya also noted China’s influential role as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council and its emphasis on effective global governance, international peace and security, and building a shared future through cooperation. He urged Nepal to harness the benefits of China’s development achievements to advance its own path toward prosperity.

Meanwhile, Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is scheduled to attend a welcome ceremony hosted by China’s Ambassador to Nepal, Chen Song, on Friday evening, according to the Prime Minister’s private secretariat.
