Birgunj Customs records Rs 434 billion in imports from India



KATHMANDU: In the first 11 months of the current fiscal year 2024/25, Nepal imported goods worth Rs 434.26 billion from India through the Birgunj Customs Office, reaffirming India’s position as Nepal’s largest trading partner through this major customs point.

According to Deepak Lamichhane, Chief Customs Administrator at Birgunj, trade with India dominates both the import and export volumes handled at the customs. Indian imports account for 76.80% of the total goods imported through Birgunj.

In terms of imports, Argentina ranked second after India, with goods worth Rs 46.74 billion (8.27% of total imports). China followed in third place, contributing Rs 28.86 billion worth of imports, which represents 1.22% of the total.

Overall, the Birgunj Customs Office recorded total imports of Rs 565.42 billion from 50 countries during the 11-month period.

On the export side, Nepal exported goods worth Rs 91.51 billion through Birgunj, with Rs 86.97 billion of that sent to India, comprising a substantial 95.05% of the total export volume from the checkpoint.

The United States ranked second in terms of export destinations via Birgunj, receiving Rs 2.18 billion worth of goods (2.38% of exports), followed by Afghanistan, which imported goods worth Rs 680 million during the same period.
