Protests banned in Kathmandu except in Koteshwor, Balkhu, and Sifal

KATHMANDU:  The District Administration Office (DAO) of Kathmandu has prohibited protests in all areas of the capital except Koteshwor, Balkhu, and Sifal.

Issuing a notice on Sunday evening, the DAO stated that sit-ins, rallies, demonstrations, and public gatherings will not be allowed within the Ring Road and in public spaces inside the Ring Road for up to two months. The decision was made under Clause 6(3) of the Local Administration Act, 2028, citing disruptions to essential services, public transportation, and overall peace and security.

The notice, signed by Chief District Officer Rishiram Tiwari, explains that complaints from the public and risks to public property and order led to the enforcement of this restriction.

However, exceptions will be made for events that receive prior approval from the administration. The directive comes at a time when pro-monarchy protests are ongoing in the capital.
