Newar community of Bhojpur joins hands to preserve ‘Dhime Baja’

BHOJPUR: The Newar community of Bhojpur has launched a one-month training program to preserve the traditional Dhime Baja, a cultural drum on the brink of extinction. The initiative aims to pass on this musical heritage to the younger generation.

Organized by Newa Misa Dabu, the training is part of a broader effort to safeguard Newar language, art, and culture.

Chairperson Awani Shakya said the training was designed to educate youth about the significance of the Dhime Baja and inspire them to continue the tradition.

Trainer Prem Shakya emphasized the importance of preserving traditional instruments, attire, and customs, adding, “Programs like this at the district level are essential for passing on our art and skills to future generations.”

With waning interest among the youth, cultural leaders fear a gradual erosion of heritage. Chairperson Shakya stressed the need to involve and encourage young people in cultural preservation efforts.

One of the 15 participants, Nilesh Pradhan, said the training was an eye-opener. “I had no prior knowledge about the Dhime Baja, but now, after a month of training, I can play it confidently,” he shared.

The Dhime Baja is traditionally played by the Newar community during festivals such as New Year, Bijaya Dashami (Dashain), Deepawali, and Gaijatra. Community leaders warn that unless these traditions are actively taught and practiced, they risk fading away.

Bhojpur Municipality Mayor Kailash Kumar Ale also expressed support for the initiative.

Calling Nepali customs and culture “invaluable assets,” he said promoting all languages, religions, and cultural practices is a shared responsibility.

“The Dhime Baja is more than just a musical instrument—it represents our identity,” he said, adding that skills gained during training must be put into active use.
