Hridayendra’s appeal: Let’s respect each other’s opinions

KATHMANDU: Former Crown Prince Hridayendra Shah, who has long stayed away from the political spotlight, has found himself unexpectedly drawn into public debate—after actress Suraksha Pant suggested he play a role in a film.

Even Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli weighed in on the issue, turning a light-hearted remark into a national conversation.

In response, Hridayendra took to Instagram to share a thoughtful message:
“Sometimes it is more difficult to be true and real than to play a role in a film. We all have the right to express our opinions openly. Everyone should respect each other’s views. Let’s spread kindness. Nepalis should support one another—not tear each other down.”

Known for his reserved and composed demeanor, Hridayendra has maintained a low profile and has largely avoided controversy, a stark contrast to his father, former Crown Prince Paras Shah, who was often embroiled in public scandals.

Hridayendra, by contrast, is admired by many for his humility and discipline. A large number of young Nepalis, especially women, are fans of his calm personality, with some even referring to him as a “crush.”

At 22, Hridayendra is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Boston, USA, where he also completed his undergraduate studies.

Focused on academics, he rarely makes public appearances, with a few exceptions at events organized by the Himani Trust. He continues to live a quiet life abroad, far removed from the political scene.

The recent controversy arose from a harmless remark by actress Suraksha Pant on a television program.

She jokingly suggested Hridayendra should act in a film, a comment interpreted by some as disrespectful or inappropriate—particularly by royalist supporters. The backlash against Pant quickly intensified.

Just as the issue was beginning to fade, Prime Minister Oli reignited it by commenting publicly. His warning to Hridayendra “not to dream of becoming a king” was widely criticized as unnecessary and overly harsh, especially given that Hridayendra has never shown political ambition or expressed a desire to assume any formal role in national affairs.

Historically, members of the former royal family have refrained from responding directly to public criticism. They do not engage in interviews or social media debates, and when they do speak, it is often in abstract or symbolic language.

Hridayendra’s recent Instagram post marks the first time he has personally responded to such controversy. Importantly, his message was free of blame or accusations, focusing instead on tolerance, respect, and unity.
