Govt continues efforts to secure visa for Sandeep Lamichhane for T-20 World Cup: Minister Sharma

KATHMANDU: The government has emphasized its ongoing efforts to secure a visa for cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane to enable his participation in the ICC T20 World Cup in the United States.

The US Embassy in Nepal rejected Sandeep’s visa application for the second time on Thursday, just ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, slated to be held in America and the West Indies.

However, government spokesperson Rekha Sharma, speaking at a press conference at Singha Durbar, affirmed that efforts to assist Lamichhane in obtaining a visa are actively underway.

“We are prioritizing our efforts in Sandeep Lamichhane’s visa case. It’s not appropriate to speculate on why the visa was not granted. This is a matter for the concerned country. Further efforts are being made in this regard. Let’s see what unfolds,” she stated.

Nepal has been participating in the ICC T20 World Cup since June 4.

Their next match in the tournament will be against the Netherlands in Group D. Nepal shares their group with South Africa, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh.

Nepal’s initial team for the World Cup has already arrived in the United States.

Lamichhane, initially not included in the 15-member squad due to his case being sub-judice, was later added to the list in coordination with the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) and the International Cricket Council (ICC).
