CIAA files charges against eight for alleged irregularities in road construction

KATHMANDU: The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has pressed corruption charges against eight people, accusing them of irregularities in road construction managed by the Consumer Committee.

On Friday, the authorities lodged a case in the Special Court against former chief administrative officer of Soru Rural Municipality, Birendra Malla, engineer Prakash Acharya, and six others.

Assistant sub-engineer Bikram Budha, Consumer Committee chairman Hasta Bahadur Bumi, treasurer Dhauli Kami, and secretary Kewal Budha are also named among those indicted by the CIAA.

Similarly, the CIAA has implicated Dalbir Sarki, a member of Soru Rural Municipality and convener of the coordination committee, as well as former Ward Chairman of Soru-7, Rajendra Bumi.

They stand accused of irregularities in road construction, including collusion in bidding and payment based on fabricated reports during the fiscal year 2077/78.

The CIAA asserts that the road’s width was misrepresented in the reports, payments were processed based on falsified documents, and the work was not completed according to the terms of the contract.

The CIAA is seeking a fine of Rs 1,372,000 from each accused individual, along with imprisonment and compensation.
