China ready to help upgrade Barhabise-Tatopani Road: Ambassador Chen

SINDHUPALCHOK: The Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Nepal, Chen Song, has announced that China is ready to assist in upgrading the Barhabise-Tatopani road section.

During a discussion on Wednesday evening with stakeholders at the Tatopani Customs Office regarding border management and the road leading to the Miteri Bridge, Ambassador Chen emphasized that both countries could collaborate on road construction.

He also mentioned that Chinese technicians would be sent to study the landslide-prone areas and other aspects of the road.

MP from Sindhupalchok, Madhav Sapkota, highlighted that 1.2 billion rupees have been allocated for the road upgrade and proposed a joint effort between the two countries.

Arjun Shrestha, Head of the Road Division Office in Dolakha, presented a detailed project report on the road upgrading work prepared by Nepal.

The discussion was attended by Dr. Rupak Sapkota, Advisor to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs; Pasangnorbu Sherpa, Chair of Bhotekoshi Rural Municipality; local representatives; political party members; the Chief District Officer; the Chief of the Security Agency; the Chief of the Customs Office; and staff from the Division Road Office.

The Tatopani trade and transit point with China, which was closed following the 2015 earthquake, was reopened in September 2023.

An agreement was reached during the visit of Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ to China last October for the Chinese side to assist in upgrading the road leading to the border crossing.
