KATHMANDU: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Health and Population, Upendra Yadav, emphasized the importance of meaningful assistance from international development partners, including the UN, to uphold Nepal’s achievements in the health sector.
Currently in New York, USA, to attend the 57th session of the Commission on Population and Development, the DPM met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
During their discussion at the UN Headquarters, Yadav underscored Nepal’s need for assistance to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and sustain improvements in the health sector.
Yadav reaffirmed Nepal’s commitment to the UN charter and principles and acknowledged the UN’s significant contribution to Nepal’s socio-economic development.
He highlighted Nepal’s progress in poverty alleviation, healthcare services, and reduction of maternal mortality rates.
In response, Secretary-General Guterres recalled his visit to Nepal and commended Nepal-UN relations. He praised Nepal’s efforts in promoting human rights, world peace, security, and SDGs.
Guterres pledged to increase assistance to Nepal through various UN agencies and stressed the importance of collective efforts to address the impacts of climate change.
“Nepal deserves climate justice,” argued Guterres.
Accompanying the DPM in the meeting were Nepal’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Lok Bahadur Thapa, and senior officials from the Nepalese government.
