Ilam-2 by-election: Candidate selection underway



ILAM: The process of selecting candidates for the upcoming by-election scheduled for April 27 in Ilam constituency number 2 is currently underway.

So far, CPN-UML, Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), CPN-Unified Socialist Party, and Rastriya Prajtantra Party (RPP) have announced their candidates.

However, the Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN-Maoist Center are still deliberating on their potential contenders.

UML has nominated the late Subas Nembang’s son Suhang Nembang as their candidate.

Similarly, RSP has selected Milan Limbu, while the Unified Socialist Party has announced Jit Bahadur Rai, and RPP has chosen Laxmi Gurung as their respective candidates.

Furthermore, the identity-seeking group nominated Dikendra Singh Thegim as their candidate. Similarly, Premdeep Limbu, the central president of the Kirat Limbuwan Naming Campaign, has announced an independent candidacy.

Now, NC and Maoist Center are yet to finalize their candidates. These two parties are still in internal discussions regarding candidate selection. While NC plans to announce its candidates next Tuesday, the Maoist Center is still in a state of indecision.

In the 2079 general elections, UML’s Subas Chandra Nembang emerged victorious from this constituency by a narrow margin, securing 30,020 votes. His closest rival, Dambur Bahadur Khadka of NC, garnered 29,906 votes. Khadka had the support of the Maoist Center and the Unified Socialist Party.

Similarly, Prakash Sapkota of the RSP received 1,380 votes, while Mani Bahadur Limbu of the Mongol National Organization secured 1,363 votes.

Additionally, Rashtriya Janamukti’s Khadga Prasad Paluwa received 1,272 votes, Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP)’s Yam Prasad Limbu received 724 votes, and Ganesh Prasad Dulal of the RPP secured 510 votes.

In terms of vote share, UML received 26,562 votes, NC received 22,333 votes, Maoist Center received 5,153 votes, and RSP received 4,686 votes.

Similarly, RPP received 1,191 votes, JSP received 906 votes, and the Unified Socialist Party received 586 votes.
