KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has urged everyone to increase efforts to keep mountains free from pollution and to protect them.
Speaking at a program organized on the occasion of the 71st International Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest) Day, Prime Minister Dahal emphasized the need for collaboration and coordination among all concerned bodies to protect the mountains.
He called for support for the government’s ‘Save Mountain, Save Humanity’ campaign.
Dahal highlighted the challenges posed by rising temperatures due to global climate change, which are affecting mountains including Sagarmatha.
He stressed the need to address climate change impacts and implement effective waste management measures in the mountains.
“There is a need for collaboration and coordination to make mountains pollution-free. The government has adopted a policy of holding dialogues in national and international forums for this purpose,” the Prime Minister said.
He added that snow melting, the increasing risk of glacial lake bursts, and rising air pollution are negatively impacting human life, civilization, development, lifestyle, and the health of people living in low-lying mountain areas.
Prime Minister Dahal stated that Nepal is advocating for climate justice in national and international arenas, prioritizing activities to protect the mountainous regions and reduce the impacts of climate change.
He expressed hope that International Sagarmatha Day would inspire efforts to promote tourism, preserve the mountains, address garbage disposal issues, and implement measures to mitigate climate change impacts and promote climate change adaptation programs.
“Sagarmatha stands as a unique emblem of Nepal’s identity and beauty. It serves as a hub for biological diversity and carries the historic and cultural identities of mountain people and communities,” Prime Minister Dahal said, adding, “The mountain region provides environmental benefits, clean water, and clean air to the world, significantly contributing to biodiversity, temperature control, ecological balance, and the continuity of the human lifecycle.”
Highlighting Nepal’s multifaceted identity on the global stage, the Prime Minister noted that natural, cultural, and historical heritages like Sagarmatha and Lumbini are sources of pride for the entire world.
He mentioned that the expedition journey that began with the ascent of Sagarmatha has now gained worldwide popularity, and the attraction of mountain climbing in Nepal, home to multiple peaks above 8,000 meters, is increasing.
Dahal also stated that the government is working on plans, policies, and programs to ensure the safety of mountain climbers and promote their dignity.
The government expects to welcome 1.6 million tourists to the country in the upcoming fiscal year, he added.
He paid tribute to all those who lost their lives during Everest expeditions, extending heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.
