KATHMANDU: Ruling Nepali Congress MP Hridya Ram Thani raised concerns in a parliamentary committee meeting regarding the investigation into scandals associated with CPN-UML Chair KP Sharma Oli.
In the meeting of the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee held on Monday, Thani inquired with Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak about the progress of the investigation into the Giribandhu T-State land sale scandal in Jhapa, which was raised when the Congress was in the opposition in Jhapa, when the Congress was in opposition.
“Corruption cases have arisen. Where has the investigation into the sale of Giribandhu Tea Estate reached? Where has the investigation into the alleged fraud in the Maoist combatants’ cantonment funds reahed?” he asked Lekhak, “What is the current status of the investigation into the Yeti and Omni cases? Will the government investigate these major cases of corruption and embezzlement?”
Thani urged the government to address longstanding corruption allegations involving leaders from various parties, including Nepali Congress, CPN-UML, and CPN-Maoist Centre, to demonstrate its commitment to justice and transparency.
Although Prime Minister Oli was expected to attend the meeting, he delegated his attendance to Home Minister Lekhak, who responded on his behalf. The meeting also involved a preliminary discussion on a proposed amendment to the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority ACT 1991, which aims to strengthen anti-corruption measures.
During the discussion, Thani stressed that the government should take decisive action to produce meaningful outcomes in the fight against corruption.
Home Minister Lekhak echoed the same view, warning, “The nation risks facing serious consequences if issues escalate. Let’s ensure that we’re aware of this possibility and take corrective action before it’s too late. Sitting in government, we should not assume everything is fine without tangible results to show.”
