Continued rain raises water levels near danger level in several rivers

KATHMANDU: Incessant rains have caused water levels in rivers across Nepal, from the Arun River in Sankhuwasabha in the east to the Banganga River in Kapilvastu in the west, to reach dangerous levels.

The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has issued a special flood notice, warning that rivers such as the Arun, Dudhkoshi, Sunkoshi, Bagmati, Narayani, Tinaau, and Banganga, along with their tributaries, have either exceeded the warning level or are nearing the danger threshold.

According to the department, the water levels in the Sunkoshi and Bagmati rivers have already surpassed the danger mark, while the Arun, Dudhkoshi, Narayani, Tinau, and Wanganga rivers are also above the alert level. With continuous rainfall in the catchment areas of these rivers, heavy rains are expected to persist for the next 24 hours.

The department has urged people to avoid unnecessary travel and remain safe as the rains continue.
