KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba is pursuing a middle-ground approach concerning the reports submitted by General Secretary Gagan Thapa and Bishwaprakash Sharma at the Mahasamiti meeting held in Godavari, Lalitpur, in February.
During the ongoing Central Working Committee meeting of the Congress, Deuba has initiated efforts to find a balanced solution based on the reports from the General Secretary, following feedback from members on their merits and drawbacks.
President Deuba has scheduled a separate meeting with General Secretaries Thapa and Sharma to further discuss the reports presented during the Mahasamiti meeting.
Nepali Congress Secretary Krishna Prasad Paudel stated that Deuba invited the General Secretaries at his residence in Budhanilkantha at 11 am today for discussion.
Min Bishwakarma, Head of the Information, Communication, and Publicity Department of the Nepali Congress, confirmed that President Deuba called General Secretaries Thapa and Sharma to Budhanilkantha to deliberate on the decisions to be made in the ongoing Central Working Committee meeting.
Meanwhile, General Secretary Thapa, in his organizational report, proposed that the 15th convention be held in November 2025 and advocated against forming electoral alliances at any election level.
Bishwakarma explained, “There is a Central Working Committee meeting in progress. Decisions need to be finalized in this meeting, and party Preident has called the Chief Ministers to Budhanilkantha to consult on the arrangements.”
The ongoing Central Working Committee has discussed 11 agendas, including the reports submitted to the Mahasamiti.
To date, opinions have been shared by former party officers and office bearers.
The NC Central Working Committee is scheduled to meet again on August 28.
During the Mahasamiti meeting, General Secretary Sharma proposed regulations for party leaders and MPs, suggesting that no individual should serve as Prime Minister more than twice.
Sharma’s report recommended term limits for various positions: one term for the President, two terms for the Prime Minister, three terms for Ministers, and four terms for Parliamentarians.
This proposal has faced significant opposition from several leaders.
Meanwhile, General Secretary Thapa, in his organizational report, proposed that the 15th convention be held in November 2025 and advocated against forming electoral alliances at any election level.
Thapa supported creating coalitions based on national needs after elections.
At the conclusion of the Mahasamiti meeting, NC President Deuba indicated that the documents would be amended following thorough discussions in the Central Working Committee.
The General Committee meeting, held in Godavari, Lalitpur had planned for a Central Working Committee meeting to be held by March to address the issues raised and formulate party policy.
