Arrest made in Nepal for alleged trafficking and forced marriage scheme

KATHAMANDU: Nepal Police have arrested a person on charges of taking a woman hostage after luring her to China under the pretext of marrying a Chinese citizen.

The Anti-Human Trafficking Bureau apprehended 31-year-old Sundari Rai from Udayapur Triyuga Municipality-1, Jogidah, for allegedly trafficking women to China.

Superintendent of Police Gautam Mishra stated that the victim was taken hostage by a Chinese citizen after being taken to China on a visit visa under the guise of marriage.

Investigations revealed that the Chinese citizen had sold the victim for Rs 150,000. Rai had contacted the victim through Facebook Messenger, inviting her to meet the Chinese man for marriage.

SP Mishra disclosed that the victim was held captive and subjected to physical and human torture by the Chinese citizen.

The Nepali Embassy in China facilitated the victim’s rescue and arranged for her return to Nepal.

Upon her return, the victim filed a complaint against Rai, leading to the arrest. Further investigation into the case is ongoing.
