Monsoon-induced disasters affect 33 districts, leaving 28 dead in 16 days



KATHMANDU: Over a span of 16 days, from June 10 to June 26, thirty-three districts in the country have been severely impacted by monsoon-induced disasters.

According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the most affected districts include Taplejung, Panchthar, Sankhuwasabha, Sindhupalchowk, Rasuwa, Chitwan, Lamjung, Parbat, Myagdi, Nawalparasi East, Gulmi, Dang, and Kaski.

During this period, a total of 147 disaster-related incidents were reported, resulting in 28 fatalities.

Among these, 14 individuals lost their lives in landslides, 13 were killed by lightning strikes, and one person died in a flood.

Additionally, 12 people sustained injuries, and 25 houses were completely destroyed while another 10 houses suffered partial damage due to landslides.

The Secretariat of Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane reported that landslides caused property damage exceeding Rs 6.9 million.

Lightning strikes accounted for 68 incidents during this period, resulting in 13 deaths and 24 injuries, with property damage estimated at over Rs 1.7 million.

Dr. Dijan Bhattarai, spokesperson for the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, stated that 18 people were killed in disaster incidents on June 25 and 26 alone.

Among these, nine fatalities were due to lightning, and the remaining nine were caused by flooding and landslides.
