Durga Prasai presented before Supreme Court

KATHMANDU: Durga Prasai, a medical entrepreneur and campaigner, arrested for disseminating materials containing serious allegations against Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, has been presented before the Supreme Court.

On November 24, the Supreme Court ordered the government to appear within two days and provide reasons for Prasai’s arrest.

A bench led by Justice Manoj Kumar Sharma issued the order in connection with a writ petition for habeas corpus.

The court had also issued a show cause order against the defendant, Prasai.

The writ petition was filed by his son, Nirajan Prasai, last Friday.

The Ministry of Home Affairs, Police Headquarters Naxal, Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) Lazimpat, and Kathmandu District Court were named as defendants in the case.

Durga Prasai was arrested by the CIB from his residence in Bhaktapur last week.

The arrest was made in connection with an investigation under Section 47 of the Electronic Transactions Act, 2063.

The arrest follows a controversial statement made by Prasai, in which he accused Prime Minister KP Oli of investing Rs 32.5 billion in Cambodian Telecom.

He had shared unverified ‘screenshots’ of the claim in videos posted on his social media.
