KATHMANDU: Ram Kumar Sharma, who recently left the Maoist Center to join the Upendra Yadav-led Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP), has been appointed as the party’s General Secretary.

Sharma’s appointment came during a recent election of office bearers within JSP.

Alongside Sharma, former Madhesh Pradesh Chief Minister Lal Babu Raut has also been elected as General Secretary of the party.

Sharma and his wife, Indu Sharma, left the Maoist party and joined JSP.

Sharma, who was once a Politburo member and a long-time central committee member of the Maoist Center, expressed his satisfaction with the new role.

Indu Sharma, who was also a Member of Parliament and a central committee member with the Maoists, did not join JSP’s central leadership.

Sharma’s departure from the Maoists was triggered by his frustration over losing his candidacy for the Mahottari constituency-3 ‘B’ seat. Initially nominated by the Maoists, his ticket was withdrawn on the day of nomination due to the five-party alliance adjustments.

This led Sharma to announce his decision to join Upendra Yadav’s party.

Notably, Sharma had previously served as the General Secretary of the Madhesi Janadhikhar Forum when Upendra Yadav was its Chairman.
