Three girls die in landslide in Ramechhap
Three people were killed in a landslide that struck Gokulganga Rural Municipality-6 in Ramechhap last evening. According to the Ramechhap District Police Office, the victims were three girls aged 13, 15, and 17. The deceased have been identified as 17-year-old Sita Tamang, 15-year-old Ashika Tamang, and 13-year-old Laxmi Tamang. Residents of nearby houses at risk of landslides have been evacuated.
Nepal elected UN ECOSOC Vice-President
Nepal was elected the Vice-President for the Asia-Pacific states of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). Chief of the Permanent Mission of Nepal to the United Nations in New York, Lok Bahadur Thapa, will lead Nepal in the 54-member ECOSOC. Nepal will be the chair of the Asia-Pacific states next year. Nepal’s election to Vice-President of the ECOSOC, one of the six main organs of the United Nations, was a matter of pride for the nation, former Ambassador Sundarnath Bhattarai observed. The ECOSOC is the platform for fostering debate and innovative thinking, forging consensus on ways forward, and coordinating efforts to achieve socio-economic progress including Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Mayor Nakarmi of Kirtipur Municipality passes away
Rajkumar Nakarmi, the Mayor of Kirtipur Municipality, has passed away. Madhav Prasad Dhakal, the Chief Administrative Officer of the municipality, stated that Nakarmi died during treatment at Bir Hospital last night. In light of Nakarmi’s passing, the entire municipality has been granted mourning leave for today. Dhakal announced that Nakarmi’s body will be brought to Kirtipur Municipality at 9 a.m. for public respects, with the funeral proceedings to follow.
137 die in floods and landslides since monsoon rains in Nepal
As of Friday morning, 137 people have lost their lives due to disaster-related incidents, including floods and landslides, since the onset of the monsoon on June 10. Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Nepal Police and spokesperson, Dan Bahadur Karki, stated that fatalities include two in the Kathmandu Valley, 22 in Koshi Province, six in Madhes Province, 28 in Bagmati Province, and 38 in Gandaki Province. Additionally, 23 people died in Lumbini Province, eight in Karnali Province, and 10 in Sudurpaschim Province. Accoridng to the police, 148 people have been injured: nine in the Kathmandu Valley, 34 in Koshi Province, nine each in Madhes, Lumbini, and Bagmati provinces, 29 in Gandaki Province, 35 in Karnali Province, and 14 in Sudurpaschim Province.
Girl who stayed at a guest house with a boy in Gwarko dies
A girl who stayed at a guest house in Gwarko, Lalitpur, has died. The identity of the deceased has not yet been confirmed. SP Nareshraj Subedi from the Lalitpur Police Office reported that the girl was at the guest house with Sandeep BK, 26, originally from Dukuchap and currently residing in Satdobato, Lalitpur. The guest house manager transported her to B&B Hospital in Gwarko after she fainted earlier in the morning. Despite medical efforts, she was pronounced dead at 7 a.m. on Friday, according to SP Subedi.
Eight injured as house collapses in Jajarkot
Eight people from the same house were injured when their house collapsed in Kadagaon of Jajarkot district. According to District Police Office, Jajarkot, the injured individuals include 35-year-old Padam Adhikari and seven other family members. They were rushed to Jajarkot Hospital for treatment. The house collapse occurred this morning. Police said that six people, including Padam, Sarita, and Dinesh, sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving treatment at the district hospital.
Gold price down by Rs 300 per tola today
The price of gold in the domestic market fell by Rs 300 per tola today. According to the Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers’ Association, fine gold is now priced at Rs 144,700 per tola, while standard gold is trading at Rs 143,000 per tola. On Wednesday, the price of fine gold was Rs 145,000 per tola while standard gold is trading at Rs 144,000 per tola. In addition, the price of silver today is Rs 1,730 per tola.
CPN (Maoist Center) withdraws support from Koshi provincial government
The CPN (Maoist Center) has officially withdrawn its support from the Koshi provincial government. Following an agreement between the Nepali Congress and CPN-UML to form new governments at both central and provincial levels, all Maoist Center ministers resigned from their posts on Friday. The resigning ministers include Ganesh Uprety, Minister for Physical Development; Rajendra Karki, Health Minister; Narayan Burjha Magar, Tourism Minister; and Bandana Jangada, State Minister for Forest and Environment.
Rs 20 crores limit on mortgage loans removed
The maximum limit of Rs 200 million rupees for share mortgage loans extended to organizations by banks and financial institutions has been abolished. The central bank, Nepal Rastra Bank, has removed the limit on share mortgage loans for institutions through its latest monetary policy update. However, no changes have been made to the limit for personal loans, which currently remains at 15 crore rupees.
Nepal Rastra Bank unveils monetary policy
The Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) unveiled the monetary policy for the current fiscal year 2081-82 on Friday. The policy announcement followed a meeting of the NRB’s Board of Directors earlier that morning. Governor Maha Prasad Adhikari presented the new monetary policy during an event held at Baluwatar. According to Adhikari, the policy has been designed to be flexible, taking into account the government’s budget program and the 16th development plan. The release of the monetary policy, originally scheduled for the previous Friday, was postponed.
NRB reduces bank and policy rates
The Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has announced a reduction in both the bank and policy rates as part of the monetary policy for fiscal year 2081/82. Governor Maha Prasad Adhikari unveiled the new policy during an event held at Baluwatar on Friday. According to Governor Adhikari, the policy rate has been reduced from 5.5 percent to 5 percent, while the bank rate has been lowered from 7 percent to 6.5 percent.
NRB to return depositors’ money up to Rs 500,000 using cooperatives’ operators’ assets as collateral
Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has announced a plan to return depositors’ money up to Rs 500,000, using the assets of cooperatives’ operators and their family members as collateral. This announcement was made by Governor Maha Prasad Adhikari during the unveiling of the monetary policy for fiscal year 2081/82 on Friday. The policy is aimed at addressing issues within the cooperatives sector. Previously, while presenting the budget for the fiscal year, then Finance Minister Barsaman Pun had also promised to return depositors’ funds up to Rs 500,000.
‘Gaushala 26’ declines to appeal high court’s acquittal of Cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane
Gaushala 26, the complainant in the rape case against cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane, has decided not to challenge the Patan High Court’s acquittal of Lamichhane at the Supreme Court. The complainant submitted an application to the Government Attorney Office, stating that she will not appeal the High Court’s decision. The Patan High Court had overturned a previous verdict from the Kathmandu District Court, which had sentenced Lamichhane to eight years in prison for the alleged rape incident. Following this, Lamichhane had appealed the Kathmandu District Court’s ruling at the Patan High Court.
Collateral-free loans for those with foreign work permits
Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has announced a new provision to offer collateral-free loans to individuals who have obtained work permits for foreign employment. In the monetary policy unveiled for the fiscal year 2081/82, Governor Maha Prasad Adhikari stated that the bank has made necessary arrangements to provide these loans based on the assurance that remittances will be sent to the borrowers’ bank accounts. The policy was officially released by the NRB on Friday.
Six police personnel honored for rescuing pilot from plane crash
Six police personnel who successfully rescued a pilot from the crash site of a plane on July 24 have been honored for their bravery. According to Nepal Police Spokesperson DIG Dan Bahadur Karki, the Police Headquarters recognized the efforts of these officers for their risk-taking and life-saving actions. The awarded personnel include DSP Sukdev Khanal, Tanka Raut, and police constables Shree Ram Pariyar, Karan Singh Chaisir, Bhim Prasad Gautam, and Krishna Joshi. The plane, belonging to Saurya Airlines and bound for Pokhara, crashed at Tribhuvan International Airport shortly after takeoff on the morning of July 24.
Kulman Ghising warns of power disconnection if industries fail to settle dues within three months
Kulman Ghising, Managing Director of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), has announced that power supply to industries with outstanding dues has been reconnected only temporarily, for three months. During a meeting of the Public Accounts Committee under the House of Representatives on Friday, Ghising emphasized that industries must clear their dues within this three-month period. “Failure to clear the dues will result in power disconnection once again,” Ghising warned. The NEA has granted a three-month period for industries to settle their outstanding payments.
