KATHMANDU: Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) notched their maiden win of the TATA IPL 2024 season with a thrilling victory over Punjab Kings at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

Virat Kohli’s authoritative innings of 77 runs off 49 balls proved to be the cornerstone of RCB’s successful chase of 177 runs, as they secured a memorable win by wickets.

Kohli, who was given a lifeline after being dropped early in the innings, capitalized on the opportunity with some delightful strokeplay, setting the platform for RCB’s chase.

Supported by Dinesh Karthik’s quickfire unbeaten knock of 28 runs off 10 balls and Impact Player Mahipal Lomror’s crucial contribution of 17 runs off 8 balls, RCB chased down the target in the final over, stitching an unbeaten 48-run partnership off just 18 balls.

Earlier in the match, RCB’s disciplined bowling effort restricted Punjab Kings to a total of 176/6.

Despite a fortuitous start for RCB with Kohli being dropped early, they lost two wickets within the Powerplay overs.

However, Kohli’s dominance ensured RCB reached 50/2 at the end of the Powerplay, with 35 runs contributed by him.

Punjab Kings fought back with disciplined bowling, but Kohli, along with Rajat Patidar, managed to keep the scoreboard ticking.

Kohli reached his fifty off 31 balls, but Patidar’s departure shifted the momentum.

Despite Kohli’s valiant efforts, Harpreet Brar and Kagiso Rabada’s exceptional spells applied pressure on RCB during the middle overs.

With the match hanging in the balance and 59 runs needed off 30 balls, Kohli’s dismissal became a turning point. Anuj Rawat’s subsequent dismissal further heightened the tension for RCB.

However, the introduction of Mahipal Lomror as the Impact Player proved to be a masterstroke as he, alongside Karthik, accelerated the run chase.

With 47 runs required off the last 22 balls, Lomror and Karthik’s aggressive batting brought RCB closer to the target.

Karthik’s six and a four off the first two balls of the final over from Arshdeep Singh eased the pressure. Karthik finished the match in style with another boundary, securing victory for RCB with five balls to spare.

RCB’s victory was a testament to their resilience and determination, marking a promising start to their campaign in the TATA IPL 2024 season.
