Cooperative in Galkot diversifies production, ventures into turmeric branding

GALKOT: Addressing widespread criticism of cooperatives not aligning with their objectives, the Baglung-based Simrik Agriculture and Livestock Commercial Cooperative Organization is taking strides in multi-dimensional productions.

After successfully cultivating sugarcane and ginger over the past six years, the cooperative has now embraced the branding and marketing of turmeric.

Cultivating sugarcane on rented barren land, spanning 10 ropanis in Bhimapokhara and Kundule areas, and ginger on two ropanis in Titaure, the cooperative has been a key player in the agricultural landscape.

Annually selling 20 quintals of sugarcane, the cooperative has added turmeric to its repertoire this year, marking a significant diversification.

Jagannath Sapkota, treasurer of the cooperative and a leading farmer of Kundule, shared that this year, the cooperative sold turmeric worth Rs 100,000 and distributed various seeds to its members.

“It has been two years since the cooperative started turmeric farming. We have initiated the sale of turmeric this year,” he mentioned, emphasizing the return of distributed seeds to the cooperative for the following year.

The cooperative actively distributes ginger and turmeric seeds among its shareholders, showcasing a commitment to fostering local agricultural initiatives.

With operations in three different locations, the cooperative’s focus extends beyond volume to mobilizing members for small-scale agro production, particularly in turmeric cultivation.

Chudamani Upadhya, Chairperson of the Cooperative, acknowledged the challenge of achieving large-scale production but emphasized the organization’s commitment to encouraging members in agriculture.

“We have a policy to promote and support our members in agriculture,” said Upadhya, highlighting the cooperative’s new venture into branding various agro products, signaling a strategic move towards diversification.

As the cooperative pioneers small-scale agro production and explores branding avenues, it aims to contribute positively to the local agricultural landscape.
