Discussions on BRI underway, no conflict in coalition: Deuba

JANAKPURDHAM: Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba has affirmed that there is no conflict within the current ruling coalition.

During his visit to Janakpurdham to unveil the statue of democracy fighter Arvind Thakur, Deuba stated that the federal government is united. He emphasized that the coalition is stable and will continue.

Speaking to media personnel at Janakpur Airport, former Prime Minister Deuba remarked, “There is no conflict in the federal government. This coalition will remain intact. Regarding the Madhesh Province government, a decision from the Congress alone is insufficient; other parties must also weigh in.”

He also addressed the Chinese Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), clarifying that the Nepali Congress’s position is to accept only grant assistance, not loans.

“We are clear on the BRI project: we should pursue grants rather than loans,” Deuba stated. “Discussions on the BRI project are ongoing, and we will reach a conclusion soon.”

Additionally, he expressed optimism about Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s upcoming visit to China, which is scheduled for December 2.

However, the Nepali Congress and the UML have yet to come to an agreement regarding the signing of the BRI Implementation Plan Agreement during this visit.

China is eager for Nepal to finalize this agreement, but the ruling coalition has not yet reached a consensus on the matter.
