KATHMANDU: In praise of cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli referred to him as the “brand ambassador” of Nepali cricket during the unveiling of the Nepal Premier League (NPL) trophy at the Dharahara premises on Monday.
Prime Minister Oli emphasized his commitment to the development of the sports sector, stating that he will prioritize it whether he is in government or not.
He noted that the NPL will significantly contribute to promoting tourism in Nepal and showcasing young sports talents on the international stage.
While acknowledging that the government may not always provide sufficient resources for the sports sector, PM Oli assured that it will offer all possible support, assistance, and encouragement for the league.
“Sports are integral to government activities. Regardless of my position, I will always have an interest in and connection to sports. I wish victory to all participating players,” he stated.
PM Oli expressed confidence that the NPL would reinforce the belief that Nepalis excel when given the opportunity.
“May a new dimension be added to Nepali cricket; it is both a dream and a source of pride for our generation,” he added, calling the day “special for the Nepali sports sector.”
He remarked that the trophy launch at the historic Dharahara symbolized new vitality in sports.
“The towering Dharahara reminds us of our history and culture, while the grand festival of Nepali cricket that is the NPL highlights our players’ dreams and inspires future generations.”
PM Oli noted that not only cricket enthusiasts worldwide, but also the current generation, take pride in the achievements of Nepali players. He stated that cricket transcends being merely a game; it represents national pride and discipline.
Praising the quality of Nepali cricketers, he remarked, “I watched the viral video of Janakpur Bolts captain Asif Sheikh displaying sportsmanship by not running out an Irish player. He should be known as ‘Captain Cool.’ I hope Karan KC of Kathmandu Gurkhas earns recognition as the ‘Valentine Boy,’ and that he brings glory to our capital city. As for Kushal Bhurtel of Pokhara Avengers, he should aim to score a century this time and not get out on 99.”
PM Oli expressed admiration for Kushal Malla’s powerful hitting style, saying, “Looking at the Chitwan Rhinos captain, he has a natural talent for hitting sixes. He should continue to generate excitement as the captain of Chitwan Rhinos.”
He also expressed pride in Rohit Poudel of Lumbini Lions, stating that his leadership would showcase the spirit of Lumbini on the field. “Whoever wins, Rohit benefits; ultimately, the country’s victory is what matters.”
Referring to Sandeep Lamichhane, Oli reiterated, “Sandeep has become the brand ambassador of Nepali cricket. From the BBL to the IPL, his bowling has made many batsmen dance. This highlights that when given a chance, a Nepali can succeed.”
PM Oli reminisced about Sompal Kami’s memorable yorkers, asserting that he would demonstrate the strength of Karnali’s cold waters on the field.
He urged players to prepare for the next T20 World Cup and mentioned that Karnali Yaks had signed India’s Shikhar Dhawan, the second-highest run-scorer in IPL history, which he deemed a point of pride for Nepal.
He also referred to Dipendra Singh Airi as the “tiger of Nepali cricket,” recalling Airi’s record of hitting six sixes in an over. “May many such records be set in the NPL, and I extend special wishes to Sudurpaschim Royals,” he said.
Oli announced that Martin Guptill, who set a World Cup record with 237 runs, would also play for Biratnagar Kings. He expressed optimism that the NPL would promote tourism in Nepal, noting that players from various countries would participate.
As Prime Minister, he found himself in a dilemma over which of the seven teams to support but ultimately wished all teams the best. He urged fans to maintain a positive atmosphere and avoid conflict among supporters.
PM Oli concluded by suggesting that the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) organize a special women’s NPL league in the near future.
