KATHMANDU: There is a growing emphasis on the development and dissemination of Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials such as books, films, and documentaries to provide clear and accurate information about intersexuality, aimed at dispelling misconceptions prevalent in society.

Due to a lack of public awareness, guardians, families, and society at large often struggle to comprehend the diversity of intersex individuals, consequently leading to the deprivation of their human rights.

Ishan Regmi, the Executive Director of ‘Campaign for Change’, an organization dedicated to advocating for the rights of intersex people, highlighted that the biased societal notion of binary sexes – male and female – adversely affects the identity and dignity of intersex individuals.

Regmi shared his personal experience, revealing that he only discovered his intersex identity at the age of 21.

Regmi pointed out the scarcity of educational materials, such as books, films, and documentaries, addressing intersex issues.

Despite increasing recognition of sexual minorities in society, the diversity within the intersex community remains largely overlooked.

Similarly, advocate Prapusha KC raised concerns about the absence of explicit references to intersex individuals in various legal frameworks, including laws related to children, sexual abuse in the workplace, property rights, birth registration, and citizenship.

KC highlighted the challenges faced by intersex individuals in rectifying their birth certificates, educational credentials, and citizenship status, often necessitating complex legal procedures upon reaching adulthood.
