Home Minister announces plan to form task force for constitution amendment talks

KATHMANDU: Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak has announced that a task force comprising members of the Nepali Congress and CPN-UML will soon be formed to initiate discussions on amending the constitution.

Speaking at the ninth National Convention and 42nd Annual General Assembly of the Nepal National Dalit Welfare Association, Lekhak said the government has already begun the necessary groundwork for the amendment process.

He however said that there was the need to build national consensus for the constitutional amendment and added that the process would involve reviewing the constitution and identifying key issues requiring revision.

While expressing commitment to expediting the amendment process, Lekhak acknowledged that it might take some time to reach completion.

Lekhak assured that the amendment would aim to strengthen inclusivity rather than weaken it.

He also highlighted the need for additional laws to ensure the rights of the Dalit community, stating that the absence of laws aligned with the constitution’s spirit has hindered the full realization of their rights.
